It is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion, destroying the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island. It is famous for its unique view of the Santorini volcano, Caldera and Aegean Sea, as well as its whitewashed houses and narrow streets. Oia is 11km from Fira and a similar distance from the airport.
