Enjoy the Mediterranean Diet on Your Holiday

Top chefs recommend the taste and health benefits on eating dishes from Italy, Greece, Turkey, southern France and northern Africa as they have an emphasis on fresh vegetables, seafood, nuts and grains, and using olive oil or honey for cooking and baking. The online magazine, Patch, spoke with Tony Alexis of Yamas Mediterranean Grill about his memories of growing up with food and family favorites from holidays.
Tony Alexis recalls many Greek holiday dishes made by his family.
"My wife has a great recipe for a Greek Spinach Dip with Feta as well as a recipe for Dolmades filled with ground beef and lamb that she got from her grandmother, and my mom has a greens medley served with an egg lemon sauce."
"Another main course for the holidays is the Yaprakia which is rice, herbs and ground beef wrapped in cabbage served with an egg lemon sauce. Some of my fondest memories as a child are eating holiday desserts like Karydopasta, syrup drenched walnut cake; the almond cookie called Kourambiedes or the Melomakarouna with walnuts and honey. And of course on New Year's Day we have Vasilopita, a cake that is baked with a coin inside. The person that gets the coin in their slice has luck for the whole year."
