Families returning from a holiday in Zante may be among the thousands of British tourists who have hoards of foreign currency lying around their homes.
Research by Santander Credit Cards has revealed that £1.75 billion is thought to be collecting dust in drawers due to people taking more money away with them than they need.
Ian Coles, director at Santander Cards, said: "We would always expect people to return home with some unused currency - but the amounts that people are bringing back to the UK are unnecessarily high."
On average, individuals come home with £74 worth of foreign money, which 65 per cent will hold on to in anticipation of their next trip.
This year, the euro is the most common coinage to be brought back with 72 per cent of people having the cash left over.
Travellers were recently warned by the Post Office to thoroughly research credit card charges for use abroad to ensure they do not incur expensive fees.
