People heading off on a holiday in Greece may be among the 47 per cent of travellers who state price as their deciding factor when choosing an airline.

According to a survey by comparison website Skyscanner, almost half of those jetting off on vacation rate cost as more important than safety.

More than 500 people were questioned about what influences their travelling decisions and the least important aspect was found to be the stability of the flight company at just six per cent.

A further 22 per cent said reputation and reliability were taken into consideration, followed by flight times at 13 per cent.

Barry Smith, Skyscanner co-founder and business director, said of the results: "There is little point digging through an airline's financial records before booking your flights - trying to predict whether it will still be flying in six months' time."

Instead, he encouraged people to ensure they have adequate travel insurance and more often than not they will face no problems.

A separate poll by the company revealed Greece was ranked number seven in the most popular destinations in June.
