What began as a holiday in Crete has resulted in the publishing of a book centred on the island's role in the ANZAC war movement.
Journalist Stella Tzobanakis first travelled to the island of Crete, her parent's homeland, as a teenager, she writes in the Brimbank Leader newspaper.
It was during this trip that she discovered an ANZAC – Australian and New Zealand Army Corps – war cemetery, the final resting place of those who fought in the Battle of Crete.
"The search for answers and the inspiration to write a book about the soldiers and their involvement in the Battle of Crete started there," she said.
"Seeking out the stories of the ANZACs during the WWII conflict was as fascinating, beautiful and complex as the Cretan landscape itself … full of steep climbs, deep ravines, and winding gravel roads without any signs."
The resulting book, entitled Creforce: the Anzacs and the Battle of Crete, is to form part of a military history series for young adults.
It brings together the stories of the second wave of ANZAC soldiers and the people of Crete, states Ms Tzobanakis.
