Holidays in Athens offer people the chance to broaden their horizons and discover the history of ancient Greece.
Writing for the Telegraph, Liza Campbell tells of touring Athens and its surrounding regions with her son, in a bid to introduce a practical element in his Classics revision.
Visiting the Acropolis, scaling the mountains above Delphi to gain a "sensational" view of the temples below, visiting the sacred site of Epidavros, and simply appreciating Venetian-built towns made for an enlightened holiday, said Campbell.
She describes stopping on the way to Epidavros to swim in a "millpond sea beside the remains of a temple of Hera in a deserted cove, the sky beyond blending into a soft mauve smudge at the horizon".
"Finally, we drove to Kassope, a ruined city on a mountain plateau where we ate oranges and looked out on the bay of Actium, where Antony and Cleopatra lost a crucial sea battle against Octavian," she added.
One of the oldest settlements in Greece, Athens also provides a gateway to the islands of Andros, Kea and Milos which are all worth incorporating into a Greece holiday.
