Things to do in Crete: Cretan wine festival

People on holiday in Crete this summer have the chance to sample some of the island's finest wines at its annual festival.
The Cretan wine festival is held in Rethymno's Municipal Gardens in July every year, where holiday makers can sample choices of wine from the largest wine producing areas of the island.
Traditional Cretan and Greek folklore music is also on display every evening, creating a festive atmosphere.
In describing the event, Greekhotel.com states: "During the event the wine producers present their products; wine is free and the visitors can taste almost all varieties of the Cretan wine.
"But, as wine without music, dance and fun is incompatible to the Cretan psychology, the event is enriched with folklore music from Crete, but also from the rest of Greece."
Holiday makers may also wish to check out the local beaches, in particular the white sandy Balos beach which the Guardian recently highlighted as being the island's most stunning.
