Things to do in Cyprus: Try the wine

Wine from Cyprus has been catching attention as of late and visitors may want to be sure to have a taste.
Limassol is one of the main wine-making regions. Foreign and well-loved varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Carignan Noir, Mataro and Chardonnay have been successfully grown here, but aficionados may be interested in discovering the indigenous vines.
The Mavro grape is unique to the holiday destination and many of the red wines are made from this.
Other home-grown red varieties include Maratheftiko and Ofthalmo and they have been praised for their power and tang.
Those who would prefer sipping a chilled white on the terrace of their holiday villa may find themselves with the Xynisteri.
Wine critic and columnist in the Cyprus Mail on Sunday Patrick Skinner said on the website Window on Cyprus: "Today, there are plenty of good and very good wines to choose from."
He went on to say that despite the fact none have as yet distinguished themselves on the international scene, he believes this development is not far off.
