Things to do in Kea: Go back in time in Ioulis

Ioulis' timeless charm could seduce visitors who visit the Greek island holiday destination.

Kea's capital of Ioulis, or Chora, is a no-car zone, which could help to preserve the tranquillity and laid-back atmosphere often associated with the best of these idyllic locations.

Visitors have the option of either exploring the village by foot or perhaps taking a donkey as some of the locals do.

This high-up town could offer stunning views from some unique vantage points - such as the elevated monastery of Panagia Kastriani.

History buffs may be well served in Ioulis - they will find archaeological museums, cave-built churches and the antique remains of Venetian structures in the Kastro area of the village.

The capital could also offer easy access to any other places travellers are keen to visit - Mylopotamos, Korissos, Gialiskari, the Vourkari port and Otzias are all along the same road that passes outside Ioulis.

Getting there might be convenient as well - not far from Athens, the village is a choice Greek island holiday destination for mainland residents.
