People on holiday in Crete may have the chance to visit a set of ancient farmhouses that are believed to be the oldest in Europe.

The discovery was revealed recently by the head of the British School in Athens at the island's Knossos archaeological site, states greekreporter.com.

Dating back to around 6,400 BC, the ancient farmhouses are regarded to be a significant find in terms of revealing the history of the island's population.

The British School, in cooperation with Dutch scientists, have been conducting studies in the Knossos area since May 2009, the news provider reports.

Most of the work undertaken has focused on charting and imaging of "the archaeological and geological deposits with the use of state-of-the-art radars".

Meanwhile, writing for cheapflights.co.uk, Jemima Garthwaite has rated her top five things to do while staying in Crete - number one being a tour through the caves.

"Many of Crete's splendid caves are archaeological sites littered with fossils and home to amazing rock formations," she said.
