Charmed by the food markets and ruins of the Greek capital, one travel reporter has described Athens as a beautiful city.
Writing for the Business World Weekender, Jessica Anne D Hermosa told how she was won over by the historical city with its outdoor food stalls that are overflowing with pistachios and tomatoes and the meat stands displaying racks of hung lamb.
Other sights she recounted were the impressive views of the Parthenon and the vast marble collections at the Acropolis, while the setting sun was portrayed as playing a "magic trick" over the city.
She said: "That is when its alleys, cement blocks and glass panes come together to glitter and wink, unified in their mission to win over the most stubborn visitor."
The Athens Guide recommends visitors to the city wander round the Monastiraki flea market, where they can find souvenirs ranging from traditional Greek art to antiques and old books.
Many visitors to Athens now use the city as the gateway to taking holidays in nearby Greek islands, such as Kea and Andros, or to travel further afield to islands including Naxos and Santorini.
