People on holidays in Greece have the chance to visit a number of historically important sites and destinations, it has been claimed.

New Zealand Herald travel writer Jim Eagles has told of his passion to visit the country to follow in the footsteps of his father when he served in World War II.

This would involve taking in the Mt Olympus region, the ancient city of Athens, and over the water to Crete.

"Apart from the personal emotional ties, that also involves visiting some pretty marvellous places including ancient Olympus and the Parthenon, the rugged mountains and beautiful beaches of Crete," he said.

Walking the route that the New Zealander's took in their forced march from Souda Bay and Galatas over the mountains to Sphakia was also a goal of his, said Mr Eagles.

History buffs may also wish to visit the myriad of medieval palaces, maritime museums and Minoan ruins in Crete.

The five-storey palace at Knossos is a particular highlight that should not be left off any itinerary.
