Cyprus' grape festival celebrates viticulture industry

An annual grape and wine festival has been highlighted as an attraction not to miss during holidays in Cyprus .
The Mehmetcik Grape Festival in August is a major cultural event in northern Cyprus, bringing together people from all over the island to sample the regions renowned wine.
According to whatson-northcyprus.com, the 50-year-old festival brings the economic and cultural importance of the grapes "to the fore".
"The area around here is renowned for its grapes … the original idea was to provide shopping opportunities for the villagers, but has now developed into a celebration of all things grape," it states.
"Festival activities usually include such things as cooking with grapes and wine making, along with various symposiums."
The village of Mehmetcik is located at the start of the Karpaz peninsula, around 20 kilometres north of Iskele.
Other attractions during the festival include sports tournaments, traditional folk dancing and the much anticipated 'King and Queen of Grape'.
