People planning holidays in Crete this summer have the chance to attend the annual Summer Festival of Chania.

The anticipated event is held every year from July to September, and features a programme brimming with concerts, ballet performances, traditional Cretan dancing and music.

Holidaymakers are presented with the ideal chance to learn more about the local culture by joining in the festivities.

Collaborations from the Odessa State Opera and Ballet Theatre will also run alongside chess evenings, Shakespeare and numerous exhibitions, reports whatsonwhen.com.

The town of Chania is the second largest city in Crete and is situated along the north coast of the island.

According to the chania.eu website, the picturesque Greek town is characterised by endless stretches of "seashore bordered in frothy lace, inlets and islands of exotic beauty and sandy beaches tucked away at the foot of forbidding mountains".

Meanwhile, people visiting Crete have been advised by one traveller to take a tour of the island's caves.

"Many of Crete's splendid caves are archaeological sites littered with fossils and home to amazing rock formations," said Jemima Garthwaite, writing for cheapflights.co.uk.
