Those who embark on a holiday in Zante this August have the chance to experience the island's annual carnival celebration.
The Zakynthos Carnival, which runs for two weeks, features an array of festivities which include parades, street performers, masked balls and dancing.
A number of colourful floats appear from all over the island, along with fancy-dress comedians and cheese eating, a mainstay of the Greek carnival experience, states whatsonwhen.com.
The event goes back to the Venetian period when the island was still a colony of the republic of San Marco.
According to Zanteisland.com, the island's inhabitants forget everyday activities to organise "the feast that calls thousands of visitors from all over Greece with masked balls; the carnival ends in the small square of San Marco with a ritual from the past – the mask funeral".
For those who wish to take a break from the crowds, a drive around the island will have people stumbling upon charming traditional Greek villages.
