Whether for sport or for the saucepan, fishing could be a good Greek holiday activity.

Seabreams, sole, scorpion fish and sword fish are among the countless species that fill the seas around the Greek islands, where the sport has been an integral part of the culture and cuisine for most of the country's history.

Some islands that are better known for this activity are Milos, Tinos, Paros, Crete and Sikinos for access, variety and scenery, according to Greek tourist guide Holidays in Greece.

The more adventurous and fit can try their hand at underwater spear fishing, which can mean diving as deep as 10 to 20 metres to get the best pick. The guide has flagged Serifos, Kimolos, Folegandros and Naxos for this daredevil sport.

The even gutsier can head to Mykonos to be where many octopus hunters gather to catch calamari.

Early morning and late afternoons are said to be the best time for conventional fishing, with rough seas promising better catches according to fishermen's lore.

It is also advised to visit a port authority for a fishing licence if fishing independently.
