People on holidays in Athens during July have the chance to experience the renowned Hellenic Festival, featuring a variety of dance, music and theatre displays throughout the city.
The historic Herodes Atticus theatre by the Acropolis, the modern Lycabettus Theatre and the ancient theatre at Epidaurus are just some of the many venues hosting an array of cultural events.
A colourful festival that has lasted 52 summers, it has hosted some of the leading lights of theatre, music and dance, reports the official website.
This includes Pavarotti, Mitropoulos and Callas, Leonidas Kavakos and the Peking Opera.
Writing about a previous festival for the Observer, Rachel Howard describes it as a "celebration of contemporary global arts", with renowned artists performing "under a canopy of stars".
