Things to do in Corfu: Visit the Achilleion

If one travel writer's advice is anything to go on, visiting the Achilleion could be a must for anyone on a Greek island holiday in Corfu.

Bonnie Gill wrote in US publication Home & Away that this palace was among the highlights of her trip.
The Achilleion was built and named by Elisabeth of Bavaraia in the late 1800s.

An avid traveller, the former Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary was said to favour Corfu as a summer destination and spent much time there.

"It was magnificent, overlooking the island and harbour with extensive gardens, impressive sculptures, beautiful furniture - and paintings and personal belongings throughout," the writer explained.

Ms Gill went on to say she appreciated being able to take photos of everything.

The duchess' taste for Greek mythology and history meant this palace has sculptures of such characters as Homer's Illiad hero Achilles.

Another aspect of Corfu favoured by the writer was the lush vegetation in the forms of the olive, cypress and citrus trees that cover the island.
