People on holidays in Corfu have the chance to visit the famous Banknote Museum, one of only a select few in the world.

The museum houses a vast collection of Greek banknotes, dating from 1822 to the last notes withdrawn in 2002 with the advent of the euro. Now run by Alpha Bank, the museum is located on Aghios Spyridon Square in Corfu city and the admission is free.

Visitors can also view a collection of more than 2,000 items, including sketches, essays and printing plates for various banknotes, archive material, and a reproduction of the modern manufacturing process.

"The Banknotes Museum's collection is considered one of the most complete of its kind in the world, and includes the first treasury bonds issued by the newly-liberated Greek State in 1822 up until the replacement of the national currency, the drachma, by the euro in 2002," reports the website.

Also on display are the first banknotes issued by the first governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias.

Holiday makers in Corfu may also wish to step off the beaten track and take a day trip to neighbouring Albania, accessible by boat charter.
