Things to do in Cyprus: travel the Pitsilia Wine Route

Wine-lovers on holidays in Cyprus have the chance to sample some of the island's best vintages.

Embarking on the Pitsilia Wine Route takes people into the mountainside to discover hill-top vineyards, picturesque villages, and of course exceptional wine tasting.

The route takes in the mountains of Madari and Papoutsa, where classic local grape varieties flourish alongside the ancient red Mavro variety, according to the Cyprus tourism board.

Writing for worldreviewer.com, traveller Lara Piegeler describes the wine region as being characterised by "rambling patches of pine, olive and bay trees … interspersed with pretty villages of white-and-terracotta houses".

Tiny vineyards are dotted over the sloping landscape, in a region that produces the island's "best wine", she added.

What better thing to partner with wine than food?

Holidaymakers in Cyprus also have the chance to appreciate the local cuisine, or what the Brisbane Times has termed the "food of the gods".

Australian chef Annie Evans recently told the news provider of her experience working on the island, and cooking with mouthwatering, fresh produce.
