'EHIC card vital' for Greek island holiday

It is important that people going on holiday in Greece have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), an insurance expert has warned.

Travelling outside of the UK without the document could result in insurance claims being rejected, Bob Atkinson, travel expert at Moneysupermarket.com, told the Daily Telegraph.

He explained how some companies will refuse to cover expenses if people do not have one of the cards, while others may waive excess charges if a person has used it.

"It is vital that you have an up-to-date EHIC card and a full travel insurance policy when travelling in the EEA area," Mr Atkinson said.

Individuals are encouraged to pick up a copy as they last for five years and are free.

However, tourists are reminded they must still take out insurance as the EHIC only covers free treatment in some cases and does not cover private medical care.

People are entitled to the same rules as citizens of the country they are visiting and therefore may find they have to pay expenses and then claim back costs from their insurance provider when they return.
