Writer describes 'enchanting' olive harvest in Corfu

On the island of Corfu, with its 20 olive trees for each person living there, making this Greek staple is a sensuous and neighbourly affair as writer Keith Miller discovered.

This year's autumn harvest saw Mr Miller collecting the fruit from his 100 organic trees that surround his Corfiot villa.

Writing for the Telegraph, Mr Miller recounted how together with the locals he collected 246 kilos of the fruit and lugged it all to a low-tech olive mill at Sines.

He describes a community gathering where locals crowd around, "sniffing the air for purity, eyeing the colour for imperfections and finally breaking off a chunk of the local homemade bread to dip and taste.

"No one asks for permission to dip into your oil. This is a co-operative," he wrote.

The extra virgin oil he tasted was "sublime".

Mr Miller's Milos villa, which provides organic olive oil, is on the north-eastern edge of the island.

This region of Corfu is said to lush and green and boast picturesque fishing harbours. It could be a good choice for travellers looking to avoid the crowds in the south of the island.

Crete is another big producer of olive oil, as are most of the Greek islands.
