Acropolis of Lindos

The Acropolis is a stone temple of Athena Lindia which was built on the site and later the fortifications from Byzantines defenses against the Arab priates were strengthened by the knights of St.John.

The Acropolis can be reached by foot but the most popular way is by riding a donkey up the steep hill!.

 

St Paul's Chapel

The most picturesque setting of all is the tiny chapel perched under the cliff face in the shadow of the Acropolis, next to the beautiful waters of St Paul's Bay. This is one of the most popular venues for weddings in Lindos because of the beautiful scenery.

The Greek Orthodox Church say that St Paul was shipwrecked just outside of Lindos and found his shelter there.

 

Rhodes Old Medieval Town.

Known as the City of the Knights the old town overlooks the harbour and is completely enclosed by the 15th and 16th century moat which run between the inner and outer walls.

After passing through the walls and bridges you enter into a medieval world carefully restored by the Italians. This fortress once was occupied by the Turks and still has the domed mosques and hammans which are used today.

Monastery of Tsambika

The walk up the hill has 350 steps.

On the top of the hill you will find the tiny Byzantine church which is dedicated to Our Lady. It is perched high at 300m with commanding coastal views,both over Kolymbia and south over Tsambika until Lindos.

There is a legend that any woman who is trying to conceive should walk up there barefoot to pray to the Virgin and she will be blessed with children.

Butterfly Valley

On the western side of the island of Rhodes, approx 5 kms of the village of Tholos is the Butterfly Valley ( Petaloudes).

In the month of August thousands of butterflies overwhelm the valley in order to reproduce. During the periods of rain the buterflies which are still caterpillars remain in the thicket feeding on the foilage. Towards the end of May the final stage is concluded and the butterlies perfect as it is makes an appearance.

Seven Springs

The springs offer a cool oasis, even in the heat of high summer, swamped in greenery. The waters come out from the springs all year around , which end up in a small lake. You can get to the lake by walking through a narrow tunnel.

Kallithea Spa
The Kallithea Springs havebeen known since ancient times. These spa waters attract thousands of visitors every year. Alonf with families and friends many hopeto be cured of ailments by the healing water that springs from the rocks which surrounds the Kallithea Bay.

There is also a bay for snorkelling and a cafe bar which serves meals and drinks.


Mandraki harbour
This was the main harbour in Rhodes for almost 2.500 years. On the left you can see the entrance andthe two deer, a symbol of strength and wealth. The harbour still remains active with lots of sailing boats,yachts and small cruisers that offer trips around Rhodes island  and nearby islands such as Tilos, Symi, and Kos. Visitors can visit Turkey for the day from this harbour.
 

Traditional Festivals

On June 29th is the celebrations of Saint Petros and Saint Pavlos which are held in the St Paul's Bay near Lindos Village.

On June 16th is the celebration of Agia Marina in Apolakia Village.

On August 15th is the celebration of the Virgin Mary all over Greece.

From the 14th - 23rd August continues the festivalof the Virigin Mary at Kremasti. With side stalls and activities for the children.

On September 8th is the dedicated again tothe Virgin Mary at Mount Tsampika. All women who wish to conceive can crawl to the top the in the hope of conceiving a child.


On September 27th is tourismday when  the grand orchestra of Kallithea Municipality
and the orchestra  play traditional Greek folk dances in Faliraki square.


On October 28th is the 'Oxi Day' from 1940 the Greek Government defied Mussolini's ultimatum wanting capitulation. Thefestival is celebrated with all schools over Greece and military parades.
In most towns and cities precessions are held through the main street.
