One of the most pleasant surprises on the island of Lefkas are the traditional hillside villages that have remained basically unchanged and unspoilt for generations.
Katouna is a wonderful example. Famous for its olive oil, mountain honey, superb wine and local tapestry, it consists of little more than a cluster of charming old houses and a village square where you will still see men with laden donkeys negotiating the narrow lanes.
Overlooking the bay of Lefkada and the beautiful Ionian sea, the setting of this wonderful hamlet bestows it with some marvellous panoramic views and a cool mountain breeze - a godsend during the hot summer months.
Indeed, so idyllic is Katouna as a location, that several of its original houses have recently been developed to create homes that, whilst retaining their traditional appearance and feel, have plenty of modern features and facilities.
The lovely sandy beaches on the coast can be reached in just five minutes by car, whilst the nearest shops are only a few kilometres away. The restaurants, nightlife and marina of Lefkada Town are also within a short drive.
