The capital of Lesvos is the harbour of Mytilini. Mytilini started out as a fortress that protected the harbour in Byzantium times but soon grew as the population of Lesvos expanded through trade. Mytilini is home to a number of the most important galleries, museums and sites of archealogical interest on Lesvos. Mytilini also has a vibrant social scene that is centered on the harbour front and has an array of bars, restauarants and shops that vary in range from the traditional to the sophisticated.
